The Facilitator

I had the distinct yesterday pleasure of touring the new Instagram offices on the 14th floor at 770 Broadway, also home to its parent company, Facebook. The company expanded within the former Wanamaker’s Department Store building to accommodate the Instagram NYC engineering teams and to create a unique Instagram-branded office within Facebook. The office opened May 2018. This was made possible by their exceptional project team:

 — Architect: Gehry Partners
 — Project Manager: VVA
 — GC: L&K Partners, Inc.
 RE Brokers: Cushman & Wakefield
 — Furniture: Inside Source

The 80,000 s/f space is all on one floor with the public-convening and collaboration seating areas in the atrium of the space and team-segregated, workplace-flexible seating areas at the perimeter corners allowing for lots of natural light into the space. The atrium also features rotating photo art from the Instagram community. Private conference areas are named after popular Instagram themes. Employee perks include a quiet library, a full cafe, an events space and even a gelato and juice bar called the Frozen Palm. Visitors can make their own Instagram moment in one of the tailor-made areas, which include a living green wall, a multicolored translucent dome and a miniature room designed by Donatella Versace!

The landmarked building presented its own challenges during the course of the project, as all design and construction had to comply with the landmarked status. There were occasional work stoppages during the 24-week construction period, due to noise complaints and working alongside occupied tenant spaces. Because all tenants and contractors share the same loading dock, extra coordination was required to ensure timely deliveries. The main elevator feed was relocated in order to create a more open feel in the center of the space. The result of all of this effort is an office space that is very engaging and welcoming.

Special thanks to Bojana Kisic from Facebook for the tour and project overview.
