Steven Daza – Uber

Steven’s original scope consisted of running Facilities Management for three NY JUMP sites. That quickly escalated. Within his first 90 days, he went from overseeing three sites to taking over all JUMP sites from Kansas City over to the East Coast including JUMPs HQ city office in Brooklyn. Currently he oversees 16 live sites and participates in facilitating buildouts for all future sites in the 2019 pipeline. His duties and responsibilities include utilities, MEP, janitorial, snack and beverage, Fire Safety, as well as working alongside EH&S to provide the best workplace experience for his team members.

What is one thing that no one knows about you?
“I attended the Institute of Culinary Education in NYC. I was amazed by the tons of different flavors that come together to make a delicious meal. It was my first few restaurant jobs that taught me customer service skills, attention to detail and staying sharp and aware of my surroundings.”

How did you get into the Facilities/Real Estate field? 
“Building relationships was something that came naturally to me, after being a chef at various hotels and restaurants and transitioning to restaurant management, I came across an opportunity to handle administrative duties at a Property Management office, so I ran with it. I was already familiar with Fire Suppression Systems, Environmental Health and Safety guidelines, Pest control, and Facility needs and requirements so I transitioned well into the role and absorbed all the knowledge I could and then some. I started from the bottom, it’s the only way to learn and grow in this industry. The experiences and situations you come across help you grow as a person and as a professional. If you find passion in your career you can’t fail.”

Tell us about a favorite project highlight.
“I don't know if I have a specific favorite project highlight, but I do remember a sense of fulfillment for one in particular. We would have internal audits every other year, and In the first one I took part in, I was tasked with transferring seven years’ worth of documents, COIs, invoices, COOs, permits and engineering drawings for our property that was over a million square feet and had been in existence for over 45 years. Over 100,000 sheets I scanned on an unreliable copy machine that would jam up every 10 minutes. I was also responsible for handling the legwork of renaming the files and storing them accordingly. YEAH, I got it done and I felt proud about it. Although the auditor never even glanced at one file, just in case he did I had our team covered.”

What is your greatest success story?
“I’m a walking success, literally. When I was in my early 20’s I was involved in an accident that fractured my right tibia. I required emergency surgery to save my leg. I was told by doctors that I would never walk the same. I made a full recovery within the year. The power of positive energy and belief is everything to me. A ‘never say die’ attitude anything is possible.”

Tell us about a challenge or obstacle that you face in the Real Estate/Facilities world.
“Things that are out of your control, which is why communication and relationship building is key in this industry. No one wants to hear you place the blame on others. Accountability is respected and the ability to bounce back and execute will silence your doubters.”

What learning experience would you pass onto future FM’s?
“Stay in the moment. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Stand out and be confident. Cross all your T’s dot all your I’s. You have to back up your actions with solid work.”
